Often called “Kazakhstan’s Grand Canyon,” this awe-inspiring site is located about a three-hour drive from Almaty, making it a favorite destination for day trips. About Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan

Charyn Canyon, also known as Sharyn Canyon, lies in Charyn National Park, southeast of Almaty and about 200 km away. This stunning natural wonder stretches 154 km along the Charyn River, with cliffs that drop as deep as 300 meters in some areas. The Valley of Castles, the most famous section, stands out with its dramatic red rock formations that glow even more vividly at sunset.

Over 12 million years, wind, water, and sand shaped the canyon’s red sandstone into incredible formations. Layers of rock reveal a history of ancient rivers, volcanic lava, and sediment deposits. Nicknames like the Devil’s Gorge and the Ghosts Gorge highlight the canyon’s mysterious beauty & tales.

While smaller in scale, Charyn Canyon is reminiscent of many to the Grand Canyon in the USA. Its five unique sections—the Valley of Castles, Temirlik Canyon, Yellow Canyon, Red Canyon, and Bestamak Canyon—offer a variety of landscapes, with the Valley of Castles being the most visited.

The surrounding desert landscape, with its rust-red rocks and barren vistas, feels like another world. Despite the arid environment, the area bursts with life, including over 1,000 plant species, 50 of which grow only here. Wildlife thrives too, from foxes and hares to eagles, lizards, and even wild horses.

Driving to Charyn Canyon is part of the adventure. The journey begins with Almaty’s mountain views, continues over vast green steppes, and leads to the canyon’s surreal scenery. Along the way, you’ll spot picturesque Kazakh cemeteries, wild horses roaming the plains, and the famous eagles that soar across Kazakhstan’s skies.

How to get to Charyn Canyon from Almaty

Charyn Canyon is located about 220 kilometers east of Almaty. It takes roughly four hours to drive there and is one of the region’s most popular trips from the city (by locals and tourists). Situated in southeast Kazakhstan’s famous “Golden Triangle,” the canyon is close to other natural highlights like Kaindy Lake, Kolsai Lakes, and Altyn-Emel National Park. However, getting there can be challenging, so here are your main options.

Join a tour of Charyn Canyon from Almaty

The easiest way to visit Charyn Canyon is by joining an organized tour. Many tours combine the canyon with Kaindy and Kolsai Lakes on a day trip from Almaty, though these jam-packed itineraries leave limited time at each site. However, if you’re short on time or uncomfortable driving, this is a solid choice.

In Almaty, several local tourist companies offer affordable bus tours, especially on weekends. Prices start at $25, but most of these tours are in Russian and follow a tight schedule. If you want a more tailored experience, consider checking local companies like Steppe Spirit or Onyx Tours, we heard good things about both! Steppe Spirit offers camping trips starting at $16, while Onyx Tours provides options for both day trips and multi-day tours. Day trips to the canyon cost around 8,000 Tenge ($16), while combo tours including Kolsai Lakes are 13,000 Tenge ($26).

For a hassle-free option in English to Charyn Canyon, you can book a private tour online through platforms like Viator. These tours cost more but include comfortable transport and flexible schedules. We recommend avoiding one-day tours that cram in multiple stops, as they involve long hours in the car and barely any time to explore each destination. If you have more time, we suggest booking a multiple-day tour if you would also like to visit Kaindy Lake & Kolsai Lakes.

By public transport or shared taxi from Almaty

Public transport to Charyn Canyon doesn’t exist, so you’ll need to rely on shared taxis (marshrutkas) if you want to go on a budget. Although some outdated sources mention buses from Almaty’s Sayakhat Bus Station to Saty (a nearby village), these routes seem unreliable and difficult to confirm. Even if a bus does run, getting back the same way would be nearly impossible.

Instead, shared taxis are your best bet. Head to Sayakhat Bus Station and look for a marshrutka heading to Kegen, a village near the canyon. Drivers usually shout their destinations or display signs. Tell the driver you need to stop at the Charyn Canyon turnoff. From there, it’s a 10-kilometer walk to the entrance, but hitchhiking is common along this stretch.

The shared taxi ride should cost about 3,000 tenge per person ($6) and takes 3–4 hours. However, returning to Almaty can be tricky. Hitchhike from the canyon entrance to the main road, where you can flag down passing cars or shared taxis heading back to the city. Keep in mind that hitchhiking in Kazakhstan isn’t free—you’ll need to contribute toward fuel costs.

By rental car

Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore Charyn Canyon. It allows you to travel at your own pace and visit other nearby attractions. We chose this option and turned our visit into a road trip, including stops at Kaindy Lake, Kolsai Lakes, and Altyn-Emel National Park.

A standard car is enough for the main canyon and nearby lakes, but you’ll need a 4×4 for remote areas like Altyn-Emel National Park. Local car rentals start at 10,000 tenge per day ($20) for basic cars and 25,000 tenge ($50) for 4x4s. Petrol is very affordable in Kazakhstan, at just 42 cents per liter. The drive to Charyn Canyon is straightforward, with most of the route on highways.

– Our recommendation –

Most visitors take day tours to Charyn Canyon, but they often feel rushed due to long driving times and short stops. Renting a car offers more flexibility and lets you explore hidden valleys and less-visited parts of the park. A quick calculation of a simple car starting at 10.000 tenge for the day, cheap fuel, and loading up on snacks, you are looking at a very cheap day trip!

If you’re short on time or prefer not to drive, organized bus tours are a budget-friendly way to get a glimpse of the canyon. But if you can manage the cost and logistics, self-driving is absolutely worth it for a richer, more flexible experience.

Entrance fees for Charyn Canyon

Before entering the valley, you’ll come across a small kiosk and an entrance gate, where an officer will ask for your documents (passport and driving license). In 2024, the entrance fee was 1,800 tenge ($3.50) for two people and a car. If you want to drive directly into the canyon with your vehicle, there’s an additional fee of about $2 per person. Camping costs 350 tenge ($0.85) per tent, and sleeping in your car is free.

What to see and do in Charyn Canyon National Park

Charyn Canyon National Park features five unique areas: the Yellow Canyon, Temirlik Canyon, Bestamak Canyon, Red Canyon, and the famous Valley of Castles. Most visitors head straight to the Valley of Castles because it’s the easiest to access and the most iconic.

Once you arrive at the car park, head to the stairs in front of the visitor center to descend directly into the canyon. Alternatively, you can turn left and follow a 2.5 km path leading to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Valley of Castles. The visitor center, located near the car park, has useful amenities, including toilets, a map of the park’s routes, and the Tary restaurant.

Overlook the Valley of Castles

The Valley of Castles offers some of the most breathtaking views in the region, especially from its edge at the viewpoints. Most visitors start their exploration at the entrance to this iconic valley—a smaller but stunning version of the Grand Canyon carved into the Kazakh desert.

From the visitor center, follow the clear, well-trodden path toward the canyon. The 3 km trail is mostly flat, with minor undulations, and features signs, benches, and toilets along the way. At the trail’s end, you’ll find the wooden “CHARYN” letters near the famous viewpoints. Along the route, smaller side paths lead to additional vantage points, though some are restricted due to safety concerns.

Safety Tip: Stick to marked trails and avoid getting too close to the canyon edge. The slopes can be steep and unstable. Always wear proper footwear, such as hiking boots, for added safety.

Winding roads through the valley of Charyn Canyon leading to the green oasis at the end

Explore the Valley of the Castles

Don’t stop at the viewpoints—make time to venture into the heart of the canyon! After enjoying the panoramic views, retrace your steps to the visitor center and head down the large staircase to enter the canyon floor.

The 4-kilometer trail runs through the Valley of Castles, surrounded by towering walls carved over 12 million years. Along the way, you’ll see stunning rock formations and colorful layers of stone shaped by time and the powerful Charyn River. The trail is easy to navigate, though it’s not officially marked, and takes about an hour to walk.

At the end of the trail, you’ll find the Sharyn River, a lush oasis surrounded by greenery. Swimming is prohibited due to the river’s strong currents, but it’s a great spot to relax and admire the scenery.

If you prefer not to hike, you can hop on a mashrutka (taxi) that shuttles visitors along the trail for 500 tenge one way. For an unforgettable experience, some visitors ride on top of the van, ducking under massive rock formations as the driver navigates the canyon.

Other Canyons in Charyn National Park

Beyond the Valley of Castles, Charyn Canyon National Park boasts several other canyons worth exploring:

  • Temirlik Canyon (Iron Canyon): Known for its dramatic landscapes, this canyon offers a quieter, less crowded experience.
  • Uzunbulak Canyon (Yellow or Moon Canyon): Features striking yellow hues, giving it a surreal, lunar-like appearance.
  • Bestamak Canyon (Red Canyon): Famous for its vivid red rock formations, it’s a photographer’s dream.

Reaching these areas requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle as there are no marked trails or tourist facilities. You’ll need to bring your own supplies, such as water and snacks, as there are no washrooms or resources available. While these canyons are remote and undeveloped, they offer a raw and adventurous experience for those who wish to explore off the beaten path.

Black Canyon with emerald-green river cutting through the towering rock formations near charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan

Pass by the Black Canyon

If you’re renting a car, be sure to add the Black Canyon to your route. Located slightly off the main road to Charyn Canyon, this natural gem is often overlooked by tourists but is well worth a visit. If you decide to add the Kolsai lakes & Lake Kaindy to your trip, you will pass it by anyways (but you might not even realize it so make sure to pin it on your Google Maps).

The Black Canyon is known for its dramatic scenery, featuring an emerald-green river cutting through towering canyon walls. The lush greenery surrounding the river creates a stark contrast to the rugged cliffs, making it a photographer’s paradise.

There’s a large car park near the canyon, and from there, it’s only a short walk to several viewpoints where you can soak in the stunning landscape. While some guided tours include the Black Canyon as a quick stop, having your own rental car ensures you can enjoy this unique spot at your own pace.

Where to sleep at Charyn Canyon

Wondering if you can stay overnight at Charyn Canyon? As of 2024, the answer is yes! Probably due to c*vid the Eco Lodge you read much about online got closed, so at the time of our visit, there was nothing available for spending a night at Charyn Canyon. However, we saw the construction of brand new lodges and glamping near the visitor center that are open as of now! Spending the night here offers an unforgettable experience, with beautiful sunsets, dark starry skies, and the peace of having the canyon mostly to yourself after the day-trippers leave. There are several options for accommodation, ranging from camping to glamping and small wooden lodges.

Tiny Wooden Lodges
The tiny houses, resembling cubicle cabins, offer a cozy stay facing towards the canyon. Each lodge comes with its own bathroom and costs 74,000 tenge per night.

Glamping Tents
For a more outdoor experience, glamping tents are available at 54,000 tenge per night. These tents combine the charm of camping with extra comfort.

Camping
If you prefer to camp, you can set up your tent at designated spots near the river for an additional fee of 350 tenge per tent. The visitor center rents camping equipment, including two-person tents, sleeping bags, and ground mats, for 15,000 tenge ($30).

You can book the lodges or glamping tents at the visitor center on-site or contact them via WhatsApp. While the website states that booking is available online, many visitors report that WhatsApp is the best way to ensure your booking is confirmed. Check the following website for more information.

Updated Information (2025)

It’s worth noting that the Eco Park, once located at the end of the Valley of Castles and previously offering yurts and wooden bungalows, no longer exists. However, this area remains open for camping and includes basic amenities like drinking fountains with filtered water, toilets (both squat and European-style), and covered benches and tables.

If you happen to visit and have updated information about the facilities, please let us know to keep this guide accurate!

Alternative Accommodation Near Charyn Canyon

If you’re on a road trip, another option is to stay near the Kolsai Lakes in the town of Saty, about 1.5–2 hours away. Saty serves as the base for exploring the lakes and offers plenty of guesthouses.

Most guesthouses can be found on Google Maps, and contacting them via WhatsApp is straightforward. We even saw quite a few listed on Booking.com. Alternatively, you can drive to the guesthouse of your choice. Most places will have availability, except maybe during peak weekends in summer when locals flock to the area. If they’re fully booked, locals are usually helpful in finding alternative accommodations. So for peak season, we would recommend booking something upfront.

Tips and useful information for visiting Charyn Canyon

  • Food and Water: There’s one restaurant on-site, Tary Restaurant, located next to the visitor center. It serves Kazakh dishes and is a convenient option for meals. The visitor center also has toilets, a souvenir shop, and water for purchase. However, we strongly recommend bringing snacks and plenty of water with you, especially if you plan to hike or stay overnight.
  • Fuel Up in Advance: There are no petrol stations near Charyn Canyon. If you’re driving, make sure to fill up beforehand. The last petrol stations are located in Schelek or Kegen if you’re driving from Almaty. Coming from Altyn Emel National Park? Fill up in Shonzy before heading toward the canyon.
  • Avoid Driving in the Dark: Try to plan your trip so you’re not driving after sunset. Roads in this region can be poorly lit and winding, with unexpected hazards like herds of cows, goats, and horses crossing at night. We experienced this firsthand when driving from the canyon to Saty late in the evening—it took much longer than Google Maps estimated due to the conditions.

When to Visit Charyn Canyon

The best time to visit Charyn Canyon is during the shoulder months of April to June and September to October. Summers in the Almaty region can be scorching, while winters bring freezing temperatures, making these transitional periods ideal for comfortable exploration. Not only is the weather more pleasant during these months, but the roads leading to the canyon are also easier to navigate, whether you’re driving yourself or joining a guided tour to Charyn Canyon from Almaty.

When we visited in mid-September, the conditions were perfect—warm and sunny during the day with cooler evenings that required a light layer. These shoulder seasons also offer a more enjoyable experience, as you’re less likely to encounter the extreme weather that can make hiking and sightseeing challenging.

If you’re planning to hike Charyn Canyon, it’s best to start your journey early in the morning. Leaving Almaty by sunrise ensures that you’ll arrive at the canyon before noon, giving you plenty of time to explore before the heat of the day sets in.

Charyn Canyon is one of Kazakhstan’s most famous landmarks, and weekends or local holidays tend to draw large crowds of both domestic and international visitors. To avoid the crowds, aim to visit on a weekday when the canyon is far quieter and more serene.

That said, if you don’t have access to a car or prefer a budget-friendly option, weekend group tours to Charyn Canyon from Almaty are your best bet. These tours are generally more affordable since they fill up easily, but they do come with the trade-off of visiting during busier days.

Regardless of when you visit, the canyon is at its most magical during sunrise and sunset. These golden hours not only bathe the landscape in stunning colors but also provide a peaceful atmosphere as day-trippers typically arrive around 11 a.m. and leave by late afternoon. Exploring the canyon during these quieter moments truly lets you soak in its breathtaking beauty.

What to bring for visiting Charyn Canyon

Whether you decide to visit Charyn Canyon on an organized tour trip or on a road trip, we do recommend to come prepared and bring a few essentials with you:

  • Sturdy Shoes or Hiking Shoes: While professional hiking boots aren’t necessary, comfortable and reliable footwear is a must for rocky trails.(Also see: Hiking shoes for him)
  • Hat and Sunscreen: The sun is strong, and shade is scarce during midday. Protect yourself with a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen.
  • Cash: There are no ATMs at Charyn Canyon national park, so bring enough cash from Almaty to cover entry fees, meals, and other expenses.
  • Snacks and Water: While the visitor center has water and a restaurant, it’s always a good idea to carry extra water and snacks. We personally recommend the Grayl Geopress, a reusable water purifier bottle that’s been a game-changer for us.
  • Hoodie or fleece: Weather can vary, with hot days and cooler nights, especially during summer. Bring a hoodie or fleece to stay comfortable.
  • Lightweight Daypack:  A durable, lightweight backpack (we’re fans of Deuter) is perfect for carrying your essentials during your hike.

Whether you’re after surreal landscapes or serene alpine beauty, these destinations provide an incredible opportunity to experience the diverse natural wonders of Kazakhstan.

  • Altyn Emel National Park: This park is famous for its “singing dunes” and the multicolored Aktau Mountains. The terrain can be challenging, as there were no proper roads for years, so a 4×4 vehicle is essential to navigate this remote but stunning landscape.
