Another fantastic way to discover Ella at your own pace is by renting a bicycle or scooter. Various shops and guesthouses offer bicycle rentals, providing an excellent opportunity to explore the countryside and uncover off-the-beaten-path places.

If you hold a valid international driver’s license, renting a scooter or motorcycle allows for more freedom in exploring Ella and its surroundings. Keep in mind that the roads can be winding, especially for newcomers to motorbiking, particularly in Asia. In such cases, consider utilizing tuk-tuks for local transportation, and always negotiate the fare before hopping in.

Ella offers a bunch of fantastic things to do, from exploring green mountain trails to enjoying refreshing waterfalls. The town itself is lively, with plenty of nice cafes and restaurants to relax in after a day in nature. Here’s a rundown of the top activities to explore while you’re in Ella, Sri Lanka.

1. Watch The Train Go By At Nine Arch Bridge

Exploring Ella wouldn’t be complete without watching the train pass by on the Nine Arch Bridge – one of the most popular things to do in this picturesque town. Undoubtedly, you’ve come across images of this famous viaduct bridge while delving into all things Ella. Known as the ‘Bridge in the Sky,’ this architectural gem, constructed in 1923, stands as a testament to colonial influence in Sri Lanka. Tucked away amidst lush green hills and tea fields, the Nine Arch Bridge exudes a captivating charm.

To reach this iconic spot, you can opt for a tuk-tuk ride from the main town, costing around 300 LKR ($1 – $1.5). Alternatively, take a leisurely walk to the Nine Arch Bridge, meandering through a beautiful bamboo forest before arriving at the postcard-worthy setting. Spend your time here marveling at the stone arches and waving back at passengers on the passing historic blue train. For an optimal experience, plan your visit around 8 am to avoid the crowds and explore the bridge from various viewpoints.

TIP | Grab a drink at one of the hilltop cafes like Asanka Cafe, providing an excellent vantage point to watch the train pass by.

TRAIN TIME TABLE | The train passes the Nine Arch Bridge at specific times: 6:30, 9:30, 11:30, 15:30, 16:30, and 17:30. Keep in mind that train schedules in Sri Lanka can be unpredictable, with trains often running later than planned. Double-check the train schedule in advance – you can inquire with your accommodation or the local train station in Ella.

2. Hike Up Little Adam’s Peak

After you visited the Nine Arch Bridge, one of the next best things to do in Ella is hiking up to Little Adam’s Peak. This hike is a favorite among Ella’s visitors for good reason – it’s not overly challenging, and the views are simply spectacular. Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature as you trek through local villages, tea plantations, and expansive grass fields. The ultimate reward at the trail’s end is a panoramic view that captures both Ella Rock and the awe-inspiring Ella Gap, surrounded by endless mountain ranges.

To get to the base of Little Adam’s Peak from Ella’s town center, it takes a leisurely 30 to 40 minutes. The well-marked trail guides you seamlessly through the journey. Head towards Ella Flower Garden Resort first, and from there, you’ll easily find your way to Little Adams Peak trailhead.

The initial part of the path is mostly paved and flat, leading you to the Flying Ravana Mega Zipline, where the ascent begins. The hike from the base to the top takes approximately 15 minutes. Once at the summit, feel free to stroll along the ridgeline and explore. Little Adam’s Peak boasts three peaks in total, and reaching the farthest one takes about 30 minutes. Each peak offers several fantastic viewpoints, treating you to incredible vistas of the surrounding mountains.

3. Find your way to the summit of Ella Rock

If you’re up for a challenge, make sure to check out the hike to Ella Rock – it’s a bit tougher but totally worth it for unparalleled panoramic views. What makes this trek fun is that you start by following the train tracks from Ella town. Along the way, you’ll pass tea plantations, waterfalls, and plenty of stunning viewpoints The trail is a common route for locals heading to work or school, so you’ll likely come across a bunch of people. Keep your ears open for train signals, you might need to step aside for a passing train!

Unlike Little Adams Peak, Ella Rock isn’t marked at all. Be cautious, though, as there might be some locals trying to give you the wrong directions or suggest a more adventurous route. Stick to your Google Maps, and when you get to the trailhead, leave the train tracks and head into the fields. You will cross a little bridge along the way, after which you take the left path through the tea bushes which will take you uphill. Most of the terrain is pretty easy, but the final part gets steep. The whole climb takes about 2.5 hours one way, and once you’re at the top, you’ll get a killer panoramic view of the countryside.

Some piece of advice: start your hike early in the morning to beat the heat! Also, you might encounter leeches along the way, so check your shoes once in a while!

4.  Marvel at the impressive Ravana Falls

Ravana Falls stands out as a must-visit attraction in Ella, boasting the title of the widest falls in Sri Lanka. A quick 10-minute tuk-tuk ride from Ella town, costing around 300 – 400 LKR ($1.5 – $2) one-way, will transport you to this natural marvel. Alternatively, catch a local bus at Ella junction heading towards Walawaya, this will cost you around 50 LKR.

Situated conveniently along the winding road between Ella Rock and Little Adam’s Peak. Positioned right next to the road, this 25 m-high waterfall is virtually impossible to miss.

To enhance your experience, navigate across the rocks at the base for a closer view, or if you’re feeling adventurous, consider climbing to the top. Ravana Falls is a three-tier waterfall, and you can ascend by taking the path on the right side leading to both second and third-tier falls. Be cautious, though – the climb can be rough and surprisingly challenging. It’s advised not to proceed beyond the first tier due to safety concerns, and small muddy trails are the only routes further up the hillside.

A popular spot among both locals and foreigners, planning your visit during the early morning or late afternoon is recommended.

5. Enjoy the relaxed vibes of Ella town

Ella, renowned for its undeniable charm, is probably one of the coziest towns in Sri Lanka. Beyond its magnetic natural allure that draws travelers, Ella Town offers a delightful ambiance with a laid-back backpacker vibe. Stroll through the town center, explore local shops, and browse market stalls for a taste of Ella’s vibrant scene.

Throughout the day, the town’s cafes buzz with hikers and travelers. What was once a tranquil main street, dominated by local markets and eateries, has transformed into a vibrant hub offering a diverse range of things to do. Ella now pulsates with trendy cafes, bars, and boutique shops, with the unmistakable feel of an Asian backpacker town. These cozy spots in Ella provide an ideal setting for unwinding, offering a chance to relax while overlooking the main street or immersing oneself in a good book after a morning hike. 

For those in search of a bit of nightlife, Cafe Chill is the go-to spot for the “cool kids.” As the day transitions into night, the upper deck transforms into a lively bar/lounge, creating the perfect setting for enjoying a few Lion Beers. And, for those craving Western-style treats, their burgers come highly recommended. 

6. Visit a tea factory 

You might not be aware, but a significant portion of the tea we enjoy at home originates from Sri Lanka! Ranking as the second-largest tea-exporting nation globally, just behind China. Sri Lanka hosts many of its premier tea plantations in the central regions, including the picturesque town of Ella. Nestled amid rolling hills and abundant greenery, Ella serves as an ideal spot to savor a cup of freshly brewed tea.

Checking out the intriguing world of a tea factory is one of the most popular things to do when you’re in Ella. Dive into the behind-the-scenes of local tea production and savor the chance to taste various tea flavors. Known tea plantations for a tour are Ceylon Tea Factory, Uva Halpewette Tea, Oodoowerre Tea, and Kinellan Tea Factory.

For a convenient and insightful tea factory tour close to the main town, Uva Halpewatta Tea Factory is an excellent choice. With a price tag of around Rs540 per person, this tour guides you through the entire tea-making process. From picking, rolling, drying, fermenting, cutting, and sieving, to grading – they will take you along every step during the tour.

7. Take a day trip to Diyaluma Falls 

If you’re up for a full day of adventure in Ella, consider a journey to Diyaluma Falls. It’s the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, located just an hour outside of Ella. Soaring at an impressive 220 meters —nearly ten times the height of Ravana Falls- Diyaluma Falls boasts multiple natural infinity pools that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding plains!

Embarking on this day trip from Ella begins with a tuk-tuk ride to Poonagala, followed by a 30-minute hike to reach the top of the waterfall. The entire excursion typically spans between 4 to 6 hours, depending on how long you want to hang out at the falls. Be sure to pack some snacks and water to keep energized during the hike.

For those seeking a hassle-free option, an alternative is to join a day tour from Ella. This comprehensive tour includes a visit to Diyaluma Falls along with a provided lunch. 

8. Join a day tour of the Lipton Seat 

Embark on another delightful day trip from Ella, this time to the charming town of Haputale. Known for the iconic Lipton Seat and the historic Dambatenne tea factory, founded by Sir Thomas Lipton himself. The vistas from Lipton Seat are truly extraordinary, and wandering through the lush tea fields feels like stepping into a fairytale.

Beyond the area’s captivating story, exploring the remarkable tea plantations is a primary reason to visit. Lipton’s Seat boasts a 7 km hike, surrounded by vibrant plantations and stunning hillside views! There are two routes to choose from, each taking approximately 2.5 hours. The first route begins at the Nayabedda estate, while the second starts at the Dambatenna estate.

To reach Haputale, hop on a train from Ella to Kandy with a stop in Haputale. Keep in mind that the round trip takes about 5 hours. From the train station, take a tuk-tuk to the breathtaking viewpoint overlooking Lipton tea plantation. This spot, where the renowned tea producer Thomas Lipton used to sit and admire his tea fields, offers a breathtaking panoramic view.

As an alternative, consider booking a best-selling day tour from Ella, encompassing both Lipton Seat and a Dambatenne Tea Factory tour. This option ensures a hassle-free exploration of these fascinating attractions.

9. Attend a Sri Lankan cooking class

Add some spice to your things-to-do list in Ella by diving into the rich flavors of Sri Lankan cuisine through a fun cooking class. Sri Lankan dishes are among our top favorite cuisines, and if you’re a food lover, this experience is a must-try. Joining a cooking class in Ella gives you the chance to master the art of crafting rice and curry, the classic Sri Lankan dish.

Immerse yourself in this culinary journey, guided by a local expert, and connect with fellow participants. Ella is dotted with family-run restaurants offering cooking classes; popular choices include Matey Hut and Ella Spice Garden. After careful consideration of online reviews, we chose Priya’s Cooking School, and it didn’t disappoint. Under Priya’s friendly guidance, we quickly learned to whip up an array of curries like potato, okra, beetroot, pumpkin, and jackfruit – and trust us, they were absolutely delicious.

Our time at Priya’s Cooking School wasn’t just educational but also a lot of fun. Priya’s assistance made the whole experience interesting and straightforward. Priced at an incredible Rs2500 per person, the class not only teaches you the recipes but also lets you savor all the mouthwatering dishes you’ve cooked. Priya even sends you the recipes afterward so you can recreate these culinary delights back home.

TIP | Make sure to secure your spot by booking in advance; these cooking classes tend to fill up fast, ensuring you don’t miss out on this tasty adventure in Ella!

10. Go Ziplining over Ella’s hilly landscape

For the thrill-seekers yearning for an adrenaline fix, one of the more exciting things to do in Ella is the Flying Ravana Zipline. Elevating your experience in Ella, this epic zipline spans over half a kilometer, perches at an impressive 82 meters high, and propels you at speeds reaching up to 80 kph. The thrilling ride provides a panoramic view of the hilly landscape, and with a dual zipline, you can share the excitement with a friend. Located just a 15-minute drive from the town center, right at the base of the Adam’s Peak trail, this exhilarating adventure can be found at the Flying Ravana Adventure Park. The cost is a reasonable USD 20 for adults and USD 15 for children.

If heights aren’t your thing, the Flying Ravana Adventure Park offers a variety of other enjoyable activities. Dive into the excitement with ATV quad bike rides, try your hand at archery or air rifling, or test your courage with abseiling. For biking enthusiasts, the park also presents enticing mountain bike tours. So, whether you’re soaring through the air or exploring thrilling ground-based activities, the Flying Ravana Adventure Park has a range of things to do in Ella for all adventure enthusiasts.

11. Take the scenic train ride from Kandy to Ella

Embark on a breathtaking train journey between Kandy and Ella, renowned as one of the most stunning train rides in the world. This scenic voyage treats you to spectacular vistas of lush tea fields and green hills, all while immersing you in the vibrant and authentic atmosphere inside the cabin.

For the most authentic experience, consider opting for 3rd class. Here, vendors stroll through the cabins offering typical Sri Lankan snacks, and locals are always eager for a friendly chat. The Kandy to Ella train ride typically takes around 6-7 hours. Many travelers choose to break up the journey with a few days in Nuwara Eliya, conveniently positioned midway, resulting in each leg lasting approximately 3-4 hours. Depending on your route, you can take the train to Kandy from Nuwara Eliya or Ella, or vice versa.

During peak seasons, securing your ticket 1-2 days in advance or booking online via 12GO is advisable. At Kandy or Ella station, you have the option to book a 2nd class and 3rd class reserved ticket or an unreserved ticket. We recommend booking the 2nd class reserved ticket, which ensures an allocated seat and allows you to enjoy the open windows (equipped with a fan) and the charm of open doors. Opting for 1st class provides air conditioning but restricts you from opening the windows.

It’s important to note that once reserved seating runs out, the only available ticket is unreserved, so plan accordingly for a seamless journey.

12. Do a safari day trip to Udawalawe National Park

Did you know that besides its scenic charm, Sri Lanka is a fantastic destination for safari experiences? With national parks scattered across the country, the opportunity for an exciting safari adventure is abundant. When exploring things to do in Ella, consider venturing to Udawalawe National Park, located just a 2-hour drive away. This park offers unparalleled viewing opportunities, particularly for elephants and a diverse range of wildlife.

While Yala National Park is often a popular choice, concerns about unethical practices and large crowds have been noted. As an alternative, Udawalawe National Park provides a more ethical and serene safari experience. Here, you may have the chance to encounter elephants, buffalo, monkeys, deer, crocodiles, and, though rare, even leopards.

Opting for a safari tour to Udawalawe National Park adds convenience to your adventure, with included hotel pick-up in an air-conditioned vehicle, park entry fees, and a guided safari within the park. It’s an immersive way to witness the fascinating wildlife and natural beauty that Sri Lanka has to offer.

Where to stay in Ella?

Ella presents an array of wonderful lodging choices, ranging from budget-friendly guesthouses to upscale jungle resorts offering swimming pools and breathtaking views. Our preference leaned towards the hillside guesthouses situated outside the town center. Here, panoramic views and easy access to hiking trails added to the charm of our stay. Tuk-tuks are readily available, and arranging a ride to town for evening dining is a breeze through your guesthouse.

For an optimal experience in Ella, it’s advisable to check the proximity of your hostel or hotel to the town’s main attractions. If being amidst the hustle and bustle is your preference, opt for accommodations closer to Ella town. However, if tranquility amid scenic vistas is what you seek, consider booking accommodations up in the hills.

We stayed at Blue Ribbon Homestay, perched on a hill with stunning views of Ella Gap. Surrounded by lush jungle, the balcony offers breathtaking views, making our daily breakfast a delight with both Ella Rock and Little Adams Peak in sight. A short 10-minute walk from the town center, this homestay provides a peaceful escape in the hills. The warm hospitality of the family-run homestay, coupled with spacious and clean rooms featuring large windows showcasing the green hills of Ella, made our stay truly enjoyable. The occasional visit from monkeys in nearby trees added a delightful touch of nature to our experience, creating unforgettable moments.

Where to eat in Ella

Ella isn’t just a paradise for nature lovers; it’s a haven for food enthusiasts as well. Your taste buds won’t be disappointed in Ella, where the main street is adorned with a variety of cozy restaurants and bars, offering plenty of choices.

Cafe Samsara –  Nestled on a charming side street, this little gem is a delightful find. The cozy ambiance and diverse menu make it a perfect spot. Their Lump Rice dish, a delightful blend of rice, egg, spices, and veggies wrapped in a banana leaf, is a standout. Additionally, they offer a variety of sambols for you to savor.

Ella Village Restaurant – Our love for this place brought us back multiple times! A must-try is their vegetarian rice and curry featuring five different curries, Coconut Sambol, Salad, Chutney, Chilli, and Papadam, served with rice in a banana leaf. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff enhance the dining experience. Make sure to indulge in their creamy Mango Lassi.

Ice Cube Bar & Restaurant – A welcoming spot with a fantastic vibe, ideal for those craving a cocktail and delicious club sandwiches.

Matey Hut – Positioned at the top of the main road in Ella, Matey Hut is renowned for its cooking classes and vegan-friendly Sri Lankan cuisine. It’s an excellent option for high-quality Sri Lankan food on a budget, but given its limited seating, arriving early is advisable.

Rainbow Cafe – Boasting a diverse menu (mostly vegan!), Rainbow Cafe offers both Sri Lankan and Western cuisine. From vegan pasta to smoothie bowls and mouthwatering Sri Lankan dishes, they offer a delicious variety. Situated right on the main street, the cafe features a relaxing balcony area. The prices are wallet-friendly, making it an appealing choice for a delightful dining experience.

How to get to Ella?

How to get to Ella from Nuwara Eliya / Kandy

Embarking on the renowned “Kandy to Ella train” is the ideal way to reach Ella from Nuwara Eliya or Kandy. Not only does the journey offer breathtaking scenery, but it’s also incredibly affordable and an essential part of each Sri Lankan travel experience. While the trip takes approximately 7-8 hours, we recommend breaking up the journey with a stop in Nuwara Eliya. During peak season (December to March), especially for reserved seated tickets, it’s advisable to book in advance. Secure your spot through 12go, and consider opting for a 2nd class reserved ticket for enhanced comfort and windows that can be opened, perfect for capturing Instagram-worthy pictures.

How to get to Ella from the southern coast?

For travelers coming from the southern coast, having spent time at beaches like Unawatuna, Mirissa, or Hiriketiya, the most convenient option to reach Ella is by hiring a private driver. This journey typically takes around 3-4 hours, and the prices should be approximately 15,000 LKR (around €45). Alternatively, for a more budget-friendly option, you can take a bus to Matara bus station, with prices ranging from LKR 50 to 200 depending on the specific beach town you’re departing from. From Matara, switch to the Matara-Bandarawela bus (#31, or 31-1 bus), which passes through Wellawaya en route to Ella. This 5-6 hour trip should cost around LKR 200 to 500.
