Tucked away in the lush greenery on the north side of Unawatuna beach, a standout activity is a visit to the Japanese Peace Pagoda—a must on your list of things to do in Unawatuna. Constructed in 2005 by Japanese Buddhist monks, this pagoda is more than just a serene spot; it symbolizes unity among people of different cultures and religions. Additionally, the pagoda holds a touching statue dedicated to those who lost their lives in the 2004 tsunami. 

Today, it’s a popular attraction in Unawatuna, sitting peacefully on the Rumassala hills between Galle Fort and Unawatuna Beach. The climb up to the white pagoda offers stunning views of the jungle and the ocean below. Perched on the hills, it provides a mesmerizing panorama of Galle Bay and the Galle lighthouse, especially during sunset. 

Located about 2.5 km from Unawatuna Beach, reaching the Japanese Peace Pagoda is easy—either take a leisurely walk or hop on a tuk-tuk. Given its status as an active religious site, it’s advisable to dress modestly, covering your knees and shoulders.  Consider combining your visit to the pagoda with a short 10-15 minute hike to the nearby jungle beach. 

2. Chill at Jungle Beach Unawatuna

If the bustling main beach in Unawatuna feels too crowded, escape to the tranquility of Jungle Beach. Nestled off the beaten path and cradled by the jungle on the foothills of Russmala hills, this secluded stretch offers a serene contrast to Unawatuna’s lively atmosphere. While it was once a hidden tropical paradise with fewer tourists, its popularity is growing, drawing more visitors seeking a quieter escape.

Despite its rising fame, Jungle Beach maintains a charming tropical ambiance, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful afternoon of swimming, snorkeling, or pure relaxation. Conveniently located near the Japanese Peace Pagoda, you can combine both into your afternoon itinerary. It was undoubtedly one of our favorite things to do in Unawatuna.

Accessing Jungle Beach is pretty easy – either take a leisurely 45-minute hike from town (just follow the signs) or opt for a quick tuk-tuk ride (approximately 10 minutes, costing around 400-500 LKR). If you choose the tuk-tuk option, you’ll be dropped off near the Japanese Peace Pagoda, requiring a short 10-15 minute hike to reach the beach. If you decide to hike, the trail winds through dense jungle, offering glimpses of unbelievable scenery and, if you’re lucky, sightings of the Purple-faced langur. We had a magical encounter with a family of them along the way; truly an unforgettable experience that added an adventurous touch to our visit.

TIP | The trail can get pretty dark after sunset, so I’d recommend hitting up Jungle Beach in the mornings or afternoons for the best experience. 

3. Take a swing at the famous rope swing

Moving on to the next gem – the Instagram-famous palm tree swing at Dalawella Beach, just south of Unawatuna. It’s incredible how a simple rope swing has turned this spot into a travel sensation over the past few years, all thanks to the wonders of Instagram.

The experience of trying out the swing is not only beautiful but also a bit adventurous, as the swing takes you pretty far over the water! This famous Sri Lanka beach swing rightfully earns its place among the top things to do in Unawatuna. You can find it right in front of Dreams Cabana guesthouse, just 1.5 km from Unawatuna Beach. To enjoy 3-5 rope swings, simply pay the owner 500 rupees (about $1,5). And as a bonus, they serve up some delicious cocktails while you soak in the stunning sunset, creating an unforgettable view.

TIP | For the best experience, we recommend visiting during the early-mid morning when the sun is not too harsh, or during the golden hour as the sunsets. We made the mistake of going towards noon and the sun was pretty harsh.

4. Climb the Frog Rock at Dalawella Beach

Just a stone’s throw away from the palm tree swing of Dalawella Beach, there’s an interesting natural marvel known as the Frog Rock. This rock formation earned its name due to its resemblance to a crouching frog. 

At the top of the rock, you’ll find an ideal vantage point for spotting turtles in the water and observing surfers. While climbing up can be a bit slippery and risky, it’s worth it if you feel confident. Depending on the day, there might be a bit of a wait to climb up as the rock became quite the photo spot! Sunset is considered the best time to visit, although it tends to be busier.

5. Look for turtles on Dalawella Beach

Besides the well-known attractions like the stunning rock formations and the exhilarating beach swing, Dalawella Beach provides a more serene option compared to the lively Unawatuna Beach. It’s the perfect spot for a calm morning stroll, a refreshing dip, or a laid-back afternoon of soaking up the sun. Just around the bend from the Frog Rock, you’ll discover charming spots like Rathna Restaurant – ideal for a cool drink or a quick snack. Grab a comfy beach chair, soak in the view, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

These places offer a fantastic vantage point to witness the blue waves crashing against the rocks, and if you look closely, you might spot numerous turtles swimming just offshore! The area is a fantastic place to snorkel with turtles, so bring your snorkel gear and GoPro to capture the experience. Remember, it’s crucial to maintain a safe distance from the turtles to ensure you don’t disturb them in their natural habitat.

6. Take a Day Trip from Unawatuna to Galle Fort 

When in Unawatuna, a must-do is a day trip to Galle. This colonial town is just 20-30 minutes away by local bus or tuk-tuk! Renowned for Galle Fort, a 16th-century structure built by the Portuguese and later fortified during Dutch rule. It’s the largest intact fort in Asia recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stepping into Galle Fort feels like a journey back in time, with colonial houses, narrow streets, and ancient churches and temples.

Every corner offers a unique adventure and a different perspective on the restored houses, showcasing typical colonial architecture—a reminder of Dutch colonial rule. Noteworthy buildings like the Dutch Hospital, now housing shops and cafés, add to the architectural charm. Galle Fort’s rich history makes it an unmissable stop on your Sri Lanka itinerary.

Wandering along the wall’s bastions provides a stunning view of the ocean and fortifications. The ramparts allow for a leisurely walk, and you can explore several bastions along the way. To the southeast, the famous white lighthouse stands as a beautiful and historical landmark, surrounded by coconut trees. Nearby, a strip of beach attracts many for a refreshing swim.

For the best experience, arrive early to beat tourist crowds and avoid the scorching sun. If it gets too hot, seek refuge in charming cafes or restaurants for a refreshing fruit juice. Don’t miss the chance to explore handicraft stores and souvenir shops within the fort, offering some of the country’s best souvenir shopping—an ideal opportunity to find gifts for home.

7. Learn to Surf in Unawatuna 

Sri Lanka is a renowned surfing destination, attracting everyone from novices to seasoned surfers. Along the south coast, numerous beaches are ideal for those eager to learn, with excellent surfing schools offering reasonable prices. Specifically, there’s a beach with fantastic waves perfect for beginners aiming to grasp the basics.

In both the beach area and the town, numerous surf schools, such as Aloha Sun Surf School, provide excellent instructors and board rentals. You can easily book surf lessons either on the beach or in town, with lessons ranging from 2500 to 6000r, and board rentals ranging from 250r to 500r per hour. Another option is to head south towards Dalawella, Talpe, and Weligama, or venture north towards Hikkaduwa.

8.  Catch a sunrise at Unawatuna Beach 

The main beach at Unawatuna is a popular spot for both tourists and locals. With its wide-stretched sandy expanse, it’s perfect for relaxation, featuring sections where you can rent sunbeds. This beach seamlessly connects to the vibrant main street of Unawatuna, where you’ll find numerous trendy restaurants and bars, creating a laid-back backpacker vibe. Even after sunset, the beach retains a great atmosphere, making it a fairly touristy yet enjoyable destination, distinct from places like Hiriketiya. Unawatuna Beach offers an excellent opportunity to unwind during the day, take a refreshing swim, or enjoy an evening meal.

Although, in our opinion, Unawatuna Beach may not be the top choice for sunbathing or swimming, it truly excels as a location to catch a mesmerizing sunrise. Despite not being early risers ourselves, the experience of witnessing a sunrise here was truly rewarding, coupled with a serene beach walk in the soft morning light. The beach, adorned with a few fishing boats along the shore, transforms into a peaceful haven during this early hour. One of the best things to do in Unawatuna is stroll along the entire beach during sunrise, enjoying the perfect weather and light, and then return to town for a delightful Sri Lankan breakfast.

9. Join a cooking class in Unawatuna

One of our favorite things to do in Unawatuna, and really, whenever you find yourself in Sri Lanka, is to join a cooking class. Especially if you have a fondness for Sri Lankan cuisine, this is an excellent opportunity to delve into the secrets of traditional dishes. Sea Waves Restaurant offers a unique cooking class where you can learn the art of preparing authentic dishes from a local family with a treasure trove of secret recipes. The chef is not only passionate about teaching but is also eager to share the experience of crafting Sri Lankan meals and teaching all about spices to make curries from scratch. Fluent in English, they guide you through this amazing culinary journey in an open kitchen with a charming jungle view, offering the chance to observe monkeys and birds in the surroundings.

Sea Waves Restaurant conducts two sessions per day. Before the class, you get the chance to visit the fish and vegetable market, selecting the ingredients you’d like to use in your cooking adventure. The hands-on experience involves creating five vegetable dishes, such as beans, dahl, and pumpkin curry, accompanied by fish or chicken, based on your preference. It’s an engaging and flavorful way to immerse yourself in the culinary traditions of Sri Lanka, making it one of the top things to do in Unawatuna. And obviously, the best part is eating all your hard work at the end!

10. Admire the iconic Fishermen in Koggala

Witnessing the iconic stilt fishermen of Sri Lanka is a definite ‘must-see’ if you have the chance. These images of fishermen balancing on creatively composed seats made of branches have become a symbol of Sri Lanka. Situated far from the shore, these traditional fishermen between the towns of Unawatuna and Weligama showcase incredible skill, balance, and above all, patience as they wait to reel in their daily catch.

Despite making this challenging practice appear effortless, stilt fishing is a craft passed down through at least two generations of fishermen along the southern shores. Unfortunately, the aftermath of a tsunami altered the Sri Lankan shoreline, making this method less productive. As a result, some fishermen now find it financially sensible to rent their stilts to individuals posing as fishermen for tourists.

Nevertheless, witnessing this unique sight remains one of the best things to do in Unawatuna. Riding a scooter along the coastline in the morning, depending on the season, offers a chance to spot these fishermen. The peak season from May to September is ideal for capturing these amazing traditions. During our visit in the low fishing season, the fishing poles were mostly abandoned.

11. Dive into the underwater world of Unawatuna

Explore the enchanting underwater world of Unawatuna with an exciting snorkeling trip. Whether you’re a beginner or just keen to explore the island’s marine life, this adventure takes you to one of Unawatuna’s most colorful snorkeling spots. Immerse yourself in crystal-clear waters, discovering coral gardens, schools of fish, and various marine creatures.

If you don’t want the hassle of figuring out where to snorkel; it’s ideal to join an organized snorkling trip with a knowledgeable guide who will lead the way to the best spots for an enjoyable experience. While you probably won’t get bored with Unawatuna’s beaches, for those seeking excitement, a safari tour is a fantastic option. Sri Lanka is dotted with national parks, and if you’re in Unawatuna, Udawalawe National Park is a top choice, just a short 1.5-hour drive away. This park is famous for elephant sightings and hosts a variety of wildlife, from buffalo and monkeys to deer, crocodiles, and, if you’re lucky, even leopards.

Opting for this safari tour to Udawalawe National Park adds a layer of convenience to the adventure. You’ll have hotel pick-up in a comfy, air-conditioned vehicle, covered park entry fees, and a professional driver and guide accompanying you on the safari. It’s a fantastic way to fully enjoy the captivating wildlife and natural beauty that Sri Lanka has to offer.

How to get around in Unawatuna

Navigating Unawatuna is a breeze, with the town and nearby beaches easily accessible by foot. For short trips, like a day in Galle, you can hop on the local bus. It’s a quick and budget-friendly option, taking just 30 minutes and costing around 20–50 LKR.

If you prefer convenience, you can hail a tuk-tuk from the street or use the PickMe App. Tuk-tuks are readily available, and you can negotiate a fair price with the driver for a quick and affordable ride. Prices on the PickMe app are fixed but it’s an easy and more affordable option than a taxi if you don’t want the hassle of negotiating.

For more flexibility, renting a scooter is a popular choice. Many rental companies offer great deals, and with cheap fuel, it’s a convenient option. Just remember to wear a helmet for safety.

Best time to Visit Unawatuna

When considering a trip to the south coast of Sri Lanka, it’s essential to keep in mind the two distinct seasons: the wet season and the dry season. Unawatuna experiences its dry season from October to April.

In these months, anticipate hot, dry, and sunny weather. While an occasional rainy day may occur, overall, these months offer a reliable chance for excellent weather. However, the absolute prime time to plan your visit is from February to April, characterized by low rainfall and calmer seas, creating the ideal conditions for exploration. It’s worth noting that early January should be avoided due to Sri Lankan holidays, attracting a surge of local tourists to Unawatuna.

Is Unawatuna worth visiting?

Whether Unawatuna is worth visiting really depends on what kind of beach experience you’re after. It’s the go-to tourist area in Sri Lanka, famous for its spacious beach and lined with trendy restaurants and bars along the main street. You can even find beach bars and restaurants right by the water. The beach itself is broad, offering plenty of sunbeds for rent. But if you’re craving clear water and a quieter setting, there are other nearby beaches like Dalawella Beach or ones further down the road that might suit you better. Unawatuna can get a bit too touristy, resembling well-known backpacker destinations like Thailand. However, it’s an ideal town to locate yourself near all the needed amenities and from there venture out to surrounding beaches.

For those with just a couple of days on the south coast and a preference for a more relaxed & laidback atmosphere, we recommend checking out Hiriketiya Beach. If you have more time to spare in Sri Lanka, Unawatuna is worth a visit during your trip.

Although not immediately noticeable while strolling Unawatuna’s streets, it’s a must-visit. The warm hospitality and made-to-order dishes, like rice and flavorful curries, make the wait worthwhile. If you have time, don’t miss their engaging cooking classes.

Sea Waves Restaurant & Cooking Classes – Just across, you’ll find another cooking class mentioned above. The place has an open atmosphere surrounded by trees, creating a warm family vibe. Indulge in delicious dishes like devilled chicken and rice with four curries. The inviting ambiance and delicious Mango Lassi add to the memorable experience.

Steam Yard Unawatuna – Step into this charming café for a delightful array of fresh, vegan-friendly options, including smoothie bowls, chia pudding, and peanut butter and banana toast. The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere make your visit even more enjoyable.

How to reach Unawatuna from Colombo

Traveling from Colombo to Unawatuna offers various options. You can take the scenic train journey from Colombo Fort Station to Galle, a 3-hour ride costing around $4. Alternatively, a bus from Maharagama bus station to Galle, resembling a luxury minivan, takes about 2 hours, with a cost of around 400 Sri Lankan rupees.

Upon reaching Galle, choose between a budget-friendly local bus (30 LKR) or a tuk-tuk (around 400 LKR) to reach Unawatuna.

How to reach Unawatuna from Mirissa

If you’re traveling from Mirissa, taking a local bus is a convenient option. Simply catch any bus heading west, such as bus 2 or 32. The journey takes around 45 minutes and costs only 200 LKR. Alternatively, you can arrange for private transportation by ordering a tuk-tuk through your accommodation, which tends to be more economical than a taxi, typically around 2000 LKR for the ride.

How to travel from Hiriketiya Beach to Unawatuna?

To travel from Hiriketiya to Unawatuna, start by taking a tuk-tuk or local bus from Dikwella to Matara, which takes approximately 45 minutes and costs 50 LKR. The south coast of Sri Lanka is well-connected by a train track, and frequent trains from Matara to Galle are available. Buses depart from Matara to Galle every ten minutes, costing no more than 200 LKR. Upon reaching Galle, take a tuk-tuk or local bus to Unawatuna.

For a more convenient journey, consider a tuk-tuk ride, taking around 2 hours and costing approximately 5000 LKR.
