While doing our research, we noticed a common suggestion of a day trip to Ninh Binh from Hanoi. However, from our perspective, spending only a day in Ninh Binh seems rushed. There are numerous interesting things to do in Ninh Binh, like hiking to the Mua Cave viewpoint, wandering around the Bai Dinh Pagoda, and taking a leisurely boat ride. All of these activities require more than just a day to fully enjoy.
For the best experience, we recommend planning for at least two full days. This allows a more relaxed exploration of Ninh Binh’s highlights. Ninh Binh has a laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal place to unwind and take a break for a couple of days. You could also rent a bike and casually pedal around the countryside, enjoying the scenery of rice paddies. Below you can find a detailed itinerary on how to spend two days in Ninh Binh.

When diving into information about Ninh Binh, you’ve likely come across the term ‘Tam Coc’ quite frequently. We were initially puzzled too, questioning whether Tam Coc and Ninh Binh are essentially the same place. So, what’s the deal?
Ninh Binh is a province situated in Northern Vietnam, encompassing both the town of Tam Coc and the city of Ninh Binh. It’s a bit confusing because Ninh Binh refers to both a province and a city in Northern Vietnam. When we refer to Ninh Binh, we’re actually talking about a national park situated near Tam Coc, several kilometers to the west of Ninh Binh City.
Tam Coc, located about 5 kilometers or 3 miles west of Ninh Binh City, has emerged as the preferred place to stay amongst travelers. This town offers a variety of guesthouses, hostels, souvenir shops, and tourist-friendly restaurants serving Western cuisine. Choosing Tam Coc as your base for a few days provides easy access to all the fantastic things to do in the broader Ninh Binh area. From rainforest-covered mountains to expansive valleys, waterways, and limestone cliffs, the UNESCO site boasts a stunning array of natural wonders.
How to get around in Ninh Binh
The best way to explore Ninh Binh is by hopping on a bicycle. You can easily pedal between Trang An and Tam Coc in just 30 minutes, passing through beautiful rice fields. Biking is super popular here, and it’s no wonder – the scenery along the way is absolutely stunning, with peaceful country roads winding past waterways and towering karst mountains. In fact, biking around this gorgeous landscape is one of the absolute best things to do in Ninh Binh! Plus, most homestays offer free bicycles for guests to use during their stay.
If you’re looking to venture a bit farther out to attractions like Cúc Phương National Park or Van Long Nature Reserve, your homestay can easily arrange a local taxi for you. And if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous and want to explore on your own, renting a scooter is a convenient option. Most homestays can help set you up with a scooter rental, typically costing around 100K VND (~$4) for the day, not including gas. While riding a scooter in Vietnam might seem daunting, Ninh Binh is actually a great place to give it a try since the roads here are much quieter, mostly winding through the countryside. Just watch out for gravel side roads and the occasional pothole – a bit of caution goes a long way. And this goes without saying, please always wear your helmet!
Best Things to Do in Ninh Binh
While Ninh Binh sits just a stone’s throw away from Hanoi, it maintains a serene ambiance compared to other destinations in Northern Vietnam. It’s the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city among local tourists for the weekend, and it’s not exactly an off-the-beaten-path destination amongst travelers any longer. The primary draw of Ninh Binh lies in its natural beauty: Think limestone karsts (similar to those in Halong Bay, hence its nickname “Halong Bay on land”), exploring meandering waterways by boat, biking through expansive rice fields, and discovering intriguing temple complexes and ancient ruins. Ninh Binh holds historical significance as well; Vietnam’s former capital, Hoa Lu, was situated just outside the city. As you can read there are plenty of interesting things to do in Ninh Binh to keep you a few days busy!
1. Hike Hang Mua Viewpoint
One of the best things to do in Ninh Binh is undoubtedly hiking up to the Hang Mua viewpoint. If you’ve seen pictures of Ninh Binh, you’ve probably come across the iconic panoramic views from Hang Múa. It’s a popular spot for good reason – the scenery is absolutely breathtaking! To reach the top, you’ll need to climb 500 steps up an old stone staircase but trust me, the views at the summit are totally worth the effort. Depending on your fitness level, the climb takes about 20 minutes. Just be cautious as the steps are uneven and there aren’t many handrails to hold onto.
Hang Mua actually has two peaks to explore. When you reach a split in the middle, head right to visit the pagoda, then backtrack and take the other trail to reach the viewpoint with the dragon statue. The left peak (as you face up the stairs) offers the best views, overlooking the river and Trang An’s rowing boats with limestone mountains in the background. It’s easy to see why Ninh Binh is often called “Halong Bay on land.” At the top, you’ll find a striking dragon sculpture where you can snap some amazing photos. Just watch your step – the rocks can be sharp, and there aren’t any guardrails. From a lower platform, you can also enjoy stunning views of the neighboring peak with rice paddies stretching out below.
After you’ve had your fill of mountain views, take a stroll across the bamboo bridge. If you’re visiting in the summer, you’ll be treated to beautiful lilies blooming in the ponds.
Practical Information for Visiting Hang Mua
Hang Mua is conveniently located between Trang An and Tam Coc, so you can easily reach it by bike from either place. The entrance fee is 100k VND ($4) per person, and you can park your bike at the entrance for an extra 5k VND. The cave is open daily from 6 am to 7 pm, and we highly recommend visiting during sunrise or sunset for the most spectacular views.
TIP | As you approach the entrance, you might see signs for parking lots with attendants waving you in. These spots usually charge a higher fee, so it’s best to keep going to the end of the road where you’ll find cheaper parking options.
2. Embark on a Trang An Boat Tour
If there’s one must-do activity in Ninh Binh, it’s taking a boat tour of the Trang An Scenic Landscape. Cruising along the waterways of Trang An was the highlight of our time in Ninh Binh, and it’s no wonder why it’s one of the most popular things to do in the area. As you glide along on the boat, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of towering limestone karsts, vibrant rice fields, and mysterious caves, with the chance to visit ancient temples along the way.
There are three different routes to choose from for your boat tour, each offering a unique perspective of the landscape. Depending on your preferences, you can opt for a route that focuses more on exploring caves. The other two offer more of a mix of natural landscapes and temple visits, with one even including a stop at the movie set of King Kong Skull Island. The one other one will take you through the 1000-meter-long Dot Cave, the longest and most impressive cave in the complex. So the choice is yours!
Practical Information for Trang An Boat Tour
The duration of the boat ride typically ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on factors like crowd levels. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to disembark at various small islands, where you can explore the temples and gardens. The cost of the boat ride is 250,000 VND per person (~$10), with each boat accommodating up to four people. If your party is smaller, you may be paired with other travelers to fill up the boat, but you can opt for a private ride by paying the full boat price. We recommend scheduling your boat ride for the afternoon, preferably after 2 pm, to avoid the crowds and bus tours that tend to arrive in the morning.
3. Visit the enchanting Bich Dong Pagoda
Nestled in the scenic Ngu Nhac Son Mountains lies the enchanting Bich Dong Pagoda. This stunning multi-tiered temple was built into the limestone mountains, with several caves and temples to explore.
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by a tranquil lake adorned with lotus flowers during the summer months. Crossing the lake via a narrow stone path, you’ll come across a striking triple-arched stone entrance gate, a favorite spot for capturing photos. Beyond the gate lies the first tier, where you can explore surrounding temples.
To reach the second tier, follow a narrow passage to the left, where you’ll discover a wooden temple before entering the cave. Inside, a staircase leads you to the third tier, offering panoramic views of the entrance lake as you emerge from the cave.
Practical Information for Visiting Bich Dong Pagoda
The pagoda welcomes visitors at all times, with free admission. However, it’s best to visit between 8 AM and 6 PM to enjoy the top-notch views.
It’s worth noting that some locals in Ninh Binh may attempt to charge a small fee for parking your bicycle or motorbike. As you approach the parking area near the bridge, individuals dressed in what may resemble police uniforms may demand payment. Alternatively, some cafes along the street offer parking without any obligations. Though a gesture of gratitude, such as purchasing a coffee, is appreciated.

Riding along narrow lanes flanked by rice paddies on one side and towering limestone formations on the other is an experience that’s hard to beat. Along the way, you’ll pass through quaint local villages where friendly children wave excitedly at passing cyclists. It’s a wonderful opportunity to observe the rhythm of daily life, from farmers tending to their fields to locals going about their daily routines. And keep an eye out for unexpected encounters, like grazing buffalo or flocks of ducks in the river – they add an extra touch of magic to the journey.
Don’t worry about planning a route or following a map – simply hop on your bike and let the adventure unfold. With plenty of local cafes dotted along the way, you can stop for a leisurely lunch or a refreshing smoothie whenever you please. 5. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon in Ninh Binh City
While Tam Coc often steals the spotlight, don’t overlook the charm of spending time in the heart of Ninh Binh. Embark on a leisurely bike ride through the picturesque countryside, eventually making your way to the city center.
Once there, treat yourself to a delightful afternoon at one of the local cafes. Personally, we highly recommend The Green House Café, situated near the water and boasting stunning pagoda views. Sip on a refreshing cold brew or tea as you take in the serene surroundings.
Don’t forget to explore the two pagodas located on the water. The Bac (Silver) Pagoda Towers, though relatively new, house a Buddhist hall adorned with intricately carved murals. These were crafted from volcanic stone by artisans from the Ninh Binh mountainous region.
Behind the pagodas lies Ky Lan Mountain, a small “hill” accessible from the rear. Follow the hidden pathway to reach the temple at the summit, offering serene panoramic views of the city and the majestic Ninh Binh landscapes beyond.
After working up an appetite, indulge in the best deconstructed Banh Mi steak at Bánh Mì Giòn. Trust us, it’s one of the culinary highlights of our Vietnam trip!
As night falls, witness the beautiful illumination of the twin pagodas, creating a cozy ambiance in the area. Don’t miss exploring the bustling beauty of Hoa Lu old town nearby, with its pedestrian zone adorned with lanterns, colorful murals, souvenir shops, and street food stalls. And for a truly memorable experience, hop on a small boat ride along the nearby waterways.
6. Play Temple Run at Bai Dinh Pagoda
Located in Ninh Binh, Bai Dinh Pagoda is an expansive temple complex covering over 700 hectares. It stands as the largest of its kind in Vietnam and one of the largest in Southeast Asia. This impressive complex comprises a mix of old and new temples. Each is adorned with intricate Vietnamese-Chinese-style designs. While the original Bai Dinh Pagoda dates back to the 11th century, recent years have seen significant expansion and reconstruction efforts. This culminated in the inauguration of the new Bai Dinh Pagoda, known as the Bai Dinh Pagoda Spiritual and Cultural Complex, in 2010.
Within the complex, visitors can explore various temple halls. These include the famous Bai Dinh Stupa, home to a remarkable collection of 10,000 Buddha statues. Additionally, there’s the striking Giant Buddha and other finely carved statues and decorations. For stunning panoramic views of the temple complex and its surroundings, make your way to the top of the 13-story watchtower. Keep in mind that there may be an additional fee to access the elevator that takes you to the top.
Given its size, electric vehicles are available to help visitors navigate the complex with ease (at a fee). You can expect to spend around 2-3 hours exploring all it has to offer and the best part is that entry to the Bai Dinh Pagoda complex is free!
7. Step back in time at Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
Hoa Lu served as the ancient capital of Vietnam during the 10th and 11th centuries, before its relocation to Hanoi. It held significant political, economic, and cultural importance during its heyday. The complex at Hoa Lu comprises temples dedicated to the two dynasties that once ruled from this strategic location. Situated near Ninh Binh, the city benefited from natural protection provided by imposing cliffs, rendering it inaccessible to enemy soldiers.
Although the ancient capital has weathered with time, much of what you’ll see today is a 17th-century reconstruction. Among the key highlights are the two temples honoring the emperors who governed from Hoa Lu. The primary and largest temple is the King Dinh Temple, perched atop a mountain, accessible via a climb of over 200 steps. It offers magnificent views over the citadel and the surrounding valley, with three shrine-filled rooms housed inside. Next, pay a visit to the smaller yet equally enchanting King Le Temple complex. Like its counterpart, this temple is divided into three shrines, each paying homage to the ancient kings.
Additionally, visitors can explore various pagodas and enjoy the serene scenery of lakes and mountains. The complex is open from 7 am to 5 pm and is conveniently located near Bai Dinh, making it possible to visit both sites in one trip. Plan to spend about an hour exploring Hoa Lu, with an entrance fee of 20,000 VND (~$1) per person.
8. Go bird watching at Van Long Nature Reserve
Van Long Nature Reserve stands out as one of the region’s few wetlands, renowned for its rich bird species diversity. The reserve boasts expansive wetlands, ranging from freshwater areas to swamps, showcasing a complex biodiversity. Nestled amidst limestone mountains, the protected area encompasses over 30 caves. While the surrounding mountains and forests are inhabited by various langur species, the reserve is particularly renowned for its exceptional bird-watching opportunities.
Unlike the bustling Trang An boat ride, Van Long offers a more serene experience, allowing visitors to immerse themselves fully in the wetlands’ natural beauty. Glide along the lake and river, keeping an eye out for wildlife, exploring caves, and soaking in the tranquil scenery. It’s an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts seeking a quieter, off-the-beaten-path adventure.
The boat tour typically lasts around 90 minutes, with an entrance fee of 20,000 VND per person and a boat rental fee of 60,000 VND for two persons. Additionally, visitors may have the opportunity to navigate through a cave, provided that water levels are sufficiently high. Thus, it’s advisable to plan a visit during the rainy season if you wish to explore the cave.
9. Trek through Cúc Phương National Park
Cuc Phuong National Park is renowned as Vietnam’s first national park, covering over 200 km², making it the largest nature reserve in the country. Established in 1962, the park serves as a vital sanctuary for protecting local wildlife from poaching.
With its expansive territory, Cuc Phuong boasts a rich tapestry of biodiversity, housing over 2000 plant species and 300 bird varieties, including endangered species like Delacour’s langur, golden-headed langur, and black-crested gibbon.
Jungle trekking is one of the most popular things to do in this national park near Ninh Binh. Visitors have the chance to explore its myriad trails, caves, and waterfalls. From short hour-long walks to guided full-day treks with overnight stay possibilities, there’s an adventure for everyone. Additionally, kayaking on the lake and visiting the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre to see langurs and gibbons are must-do activities.
Practical Information for Visiting Cuc Phuong National Park
The entrance fee to Cuc Phuong National Park is 40,000 VND per person, available for purchase at the park’s headquarters. It’s advisable to bring water, snacks, and insect repellent, especially during the hot months. While the park welcomes visitors year-round, it’s best to avoid the rainy season from July to September. April and early May are particularly popular for witnessing the colorful butterfly migration. Given its remote location, approximately 40 minutes away, renting a scooter or motorbike is recommended, as public transportation options are limited.
10. Take a boat ride down Tam Coc River
Apart from the stunning Trang An boat tour, there’s another fantastic way to experience Ninh Binh’s beauty—the Tam Coc boat tour. While we didn’t personally take this tour, it’s known for its unique charm. Departing conveniently from town piers, the Tam Coc boat ride glides along the Ngo Dong River. You will get to enjoy views of lush green rice paddies where locals tend their fields along the way. The towering limestone cliffs lining the riverbanks of Tam Coc add to the breathtaking scenery. A highlight of the tour is the picturesque segment where boats pass through the limestone valley, offering stunning views of those seen from the summit of Mua Cave Viewpoint.

Lasting around 1.5 hours, the tour follows a designated route through the limestone cliffs. It’s worth noting that tipping is customary at the end of the Tam Coc boat ride (the rowers are rather notorious for ‘demanding’ it), and you may encounter vendors selling items from nearby boats.

For an immersive experience amidst Ninh Binh’s breathtaking landscapes, we highly recommend staying right within them. Imagine waking up surrounded by the majestic karst limestone mountains, nestled in tranquil settings. While Tam Coc is a popular choice, it tends to be tourist-centric, bustling with day-trippers from Hanoi, particularly during peak hours.
For a more serene escape, consider accommodations outside the town, heading north from Tam Coc towards Trang An. Here, amidst rice fields, lotus ponds, and towering limestone mountains, you’ll find tranquility away from the tourist crowds. Unlike Tam Coc, this area is immersed in nature, offering unparalleled mountain views.
