Dragon Crest, or Khao Ngon Nak, sits within Had Noppharat Thara National Park in Krabi, about 30 minutes from Ao Nang. Just search “Dragon’s Crest (Ngon Nak Nature Trail)” on Google Maps to find the trailhead.
How to get to Dragon Crest Mountain from Ao Nang Krabi
Reaching the start of the hike is pretty easy, especially if you rent a scooter. The ride along Klong Muang Road is scenic, with beautiful views of Krabi’s landscapes and coastlines. It’s a 30-minute ride from Ao Nang, with scooter rentals costing around 250 baht for the day. If you’re coming from Krabi town, expect about 40 minutes. Once there you can park along the road right in front of the ranger’s office. If you’re not keen on riding a scooter, you can take a tuk-tuk or join a tour. There’s no public bus that goes directly to the trailhead.

If you’re not feeling confident about tackling Dragon Crest Mountain on your own, joining a guided tour is a great option. Tours are designed for hikers with an intermediate fitness level, so you’ll still get a good challenge without worrying about navigating the trail. How much is the entrance to Dragon Crest Mountain?
The entrance fee is 200 Thai Baht for foreigners (100 baht for children) and 40 baht for Thai nationals (20 baht for kids). You’ll find a small hut with a National Park Ranger when you arrive at the trailhead. You’ll need to sign in before starting and sign out when you return. It’s also smart to snap a photo of the staff’s phone numbers, just in case of an emergency or if you’re running late (the park closes at 6 PM).
Best time to hike Dragon Crest Mountain
The best time to start your hike is early morning. This way, you avoid the heat and crowds and enjoy softer light for your trek. The park is open from 8 AM to 6 PM, but keep in mind the last entry is at 2 PM. You’ll need to start the hike before 2 PM to ensure you have enough time to complete the hike and get back down before closing. If you arrive after 2 PM, you won’t be allowed on the trail.
How long does it take to climb Dragon Crest Mountain?
It took us just over four hours to finish, including time for photos and a rest at the top. If you prefer a slower pace, plan for around five hours. At the checkpoint, they recommend allowing about two hours to hike up and another two to hike down. But based on our experience, we suggest planning for two to three hours to get up and around 1 to 1.5 hours to come back down. We kept a steady pace on the way up, with stops to enjoy the views along the way. Once we reached the summit, we took a well-deserved break, sitting on one of the large boulders overlooking that stunning Krabi view. We didn’t rush—we wanted to take it all in before making our way back down.
How difficult is the Dragon Crest Mountain hike?
While the hike isn’t technical, it’s definitely physically demanding. The steep and rocky trail will take you about 2-3 hours to reach the top. Plus, the tropical humidity makes it even tougher. The path is well-marked but can be uneven, with rocks and roots to navigate. As long as you pace yourself, it’s doable for most hikers.
Is Dragon Crest Mountain worth it?
Absolutely! Once you reach the top, you’re greeted with panoramic views of Krabi’s coastline and the sparkling Andaman Sea. It’s the perfect spot to relax and soak in the beauty after the hard climb. Even though we were a bit unlucky with no clear skies, as you can tell the pictures are a bit milky and it’s hard to see the landscapes in the far distance, the views in real life were jaw-dropping and totally worth the hike!
What to pack & wear for hiking Dragon Crest Mountain
I don’t think we ever sweated as much as on this hike, we were drenched! So be ready to sweat as the humidity is intense, so we recommend wearing loose, breathable clothing. Here’s what to pack:
- Water: Bring at least 2 liters per person. Bring a reusable water bottle to reduce plastic waste. Consider options like Life Straw or a filtered water bottle from GRAYL, turning any water source into safe, drinkable water.
- Wear sturdy enclosed shoes: The trail is rocky and uneven, so wear proper hiking shoes or decent trainers, not flip-flops. We have been loving the low-cut Salomon for women and Adidas hiking sneakers for men.
- Sunscreen: Most of the trail is shaded by dense rainforest canopy, but the summit is exposed and burning hot!

- Mosquito repellent: It’s always a good idea in Thailand, though we didn’t have too much trouble.
- Cash: For the entrance fee and snacks from the small shop.
- Snacks: A quick snack is helpful for an energy boost after reaching the summit.

What to Expect During the Dragon Crest Mountain Hike in Krabi
The Khao Ngon Nak Nature Trail
The trail is well-marked but comes with a steady 3.7 km incline, so be prepared for a workout! Starting at sea level, you’ll walk past a stream and into the lush jungle. The first section is quite enjoyable, shaded by the thick rainforest canopy, making it a pleasant walk. But as you climb higher, the path becomes rocky and more rugged. Steep sections will have you scrambling over rocks and tree roots. There are signs and markers along the way to guide you, plus a few ropes to help with trickier parts. You’ll also come across informative boards about the local plants and ecosystems in both Thai and English.
If you’re a seasoned hiker, the trail might not seem too difficult, but it could be a bit more challenging for casual hikers. About halfway up, around 1.5 km in, you’ll hit a steep wooden staircase. From there, the trail gets even steeper, with ropes in place to assist you.
For the first 2.5 km, you’ll stay within the dense forest, but then the trees start to thin out. As the jungle clears, stunning views of the surrounding islands and the thick rainforest below begin to unfold. Not long after, you’ll reach a fork in the path—continue straight to reach the main Dragon Crest viewpoint or take the right-hand trail to Pha Nam Yod (a small waterfall). The final stretch to the summit is a mix of steep and level sections, but by this point, you’re almost there!
Dragon Crest Mountain Viewpoint
Once you reach the large, open plateau, congratulations—you’ve made it to the top! The views from the Khao Ngon Nak viewpoint are absolutely breathtaking. From here, you can look out over Krabi Valley to the south. There’s even a wooden ladder to climb onto a massive boulder that gives an even better view. It’s a bit wobbly, but it does the job.
At the top, you’ll be treated to a 360-degree panorama of Krabi’s coastline, distant islands, and the lush limestone peaks rising from the valleys below. The view is nothing short of spectacular, and the effort to reach the summit is well worth it.
One thing to note | The famous rock you’ll see in many photos – the one sticking out over a cliff – is now off-limits. The area is fenced off with barbed wire, and park rangers strictly warn against climbing beyond the barrier for safety reasons.
The Way Back Down the Mountain
After soaking in the views for about an hour, we started our hike back down to the park entrance. You’ll follow the same trail down, but the descent is much quicker. Most of the effort is in the climb up, so you’ll likely make better time going down. It’s also easier to take in the surroundings on the way back since it’s less tiring. We even spotted some colorful lizards and heard the constant, loud buzzing of cicadas, which sounds almost like a car alarm—especially by midday when it becomes quite deafening!
